Artist Biography

William Zolla is a New England-based artist whose work combines natural history, myth, and imaginative realism. Working in watercolor, ink, mixed media, and hybrid processes, he creates fantasy-naturalist images that explore the flora and fauna of imagined worlds, inspired by a rationalist philosophy.

His current work explores transformation, concealment, coastal folklore, and imagined ecology. Drawing on a background in science and a lifelong practice of worldbuilding, Zolla uses close observation, physical materials, and personal mythology to search for the unseen within familiar natural forms.

Artistic Process

My current work is made with watercolor, ink, mixed media, and archival pigment-based hybrid processes on paper. I often develop drawings through a combination of traditional and digital methods, then transfer or print the linework onto watercolor paper and complete the image by hand. This approach allows me to build precise foundational drawing while preserving the tactility, variation, and unpredictability of watercolor. Each finished piece is treated as a unique hand-painted work, even when it begins from a repeatable drawing.
